However if you want to get out and about, the Aegean coast, which was the cradle of the ancient Greek civilisation, has a wealth of ancient heritage of the Greek, Roman and early Christian eras. Here are just a few examples:
  • The Temple of Apollo – 8th century BC (5 mins) – the temple was destroyed by the Persian Xerses in 494 B.C. then rebuilt by Alexander the Great’s orders. Sometime after it was toppled by an earthquake, but still remains an impressive sight and photo opportunity
  • The city of Ephesus – 90 mins – the largest archaeological site in Turkey, with thousands of years of history in the vast ruins. Where St. John wrote “Revelations”.
  • Pamukallae (Cotton Castle) – Limestone and chalk pools naturally carved into the cliff side where Cleopatra is said to have bathed.
